United Airlines and its partner Eve Air Mobility plan to introduce eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) air taxi service in San Francisco in 2026 as part of the companies’ Urban Air Mobility project.

Last year, United said it was investing $15 million in the Florida-based company, with plans to buy 200 eVTOL aircraft from the manufacturer and options for 200 more. San Francisco would be the third United hub where it plans to offer electric air taxi service.

Andre Stein, co-CEO of Eve Air Mobility, said the aircraft features a “lift + cruise” configuration with dedicated rotors for vertical flight and fixed wings to fly on cruise, with no components required to change position during flight.

Eve Air Mobility is one of two eVTOL companies United has invested in; the other is Santa Clara-based Archer Aviation. With Archer, United has already announced two eVTOL routes — one in Chicago between O’Hare Airport and Vertiport Chicago, located downtown in the Illinois Medical District near the Loop; and another in New York between Newark Airport and the Downtown Manhattan Heliport in the Financial District near Battery Park. The companies are hoping to begin those services by 2025.
