The average on-time performance in February for North American carriers recovered to 80% in February after sinking to 71.7% in January, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics company. A flight is considered on time if the aircraft arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.
All of the 10 carriers included in the report posted improvements. Delta Air Lines was on top again with a performance of 89.3%, followed by United Airlines at 84.9% and American Airlines at 84.4%. American, along with WestJet and Air Canada, improved from last month by double-digit percentage points.
Delta, United and American each also made February’s global list of most on-time airlines, in second, fourth and sixth place, respectively.
North American carriers in February canceled 5,803 flights, about one-fifth of the more than 25,650 flights canceled in January.
Flight completion factors for February also improved compared with January, with five carriers at 99% or higher: American (99.8%), Southwest Airlines (99.7%), Delta (99.6%), Alaska Airlines (99.1%) and United (99%).
